Although I am a mom, I don’t take the day off from cooking on Mother’s Day because it has become a family tradition for me to host brunch for my mother, my sister and her family. Don’t worry—I really don’t mind. Quite the opposite, it is a joy for me. But I also don’t want to work too hard, so I keep it fairly simple with a NY-style spread of bagels and smoked fish with all the fixins ( cream cheese, tomato, onion, etc…), plus one or two special homemade items that can be made ahead.
Here are some of my favorite recipes to include. No matter what else you are making this Sunday, or whom you are cooking for (it’s a great day to celebrate anyone who is supportive and loving to you throughout the year), I know each of these nourishing treats will send just the right message. Enjoy!
Morning Glory Muffins

These better-for-you muffins deliver “morning glory” flavors from shredded carrot, coconut and apple, plus sweet raisins, a hint of pineapple and a crunch of walnuts. They are not only a win as part of a brunch spread, they make an ideal breakfast-in-bed with a cup of coffee or tea.
Very Berry Baked Oatmeal
This berry-licious oatmeal bake is both comforting and bursting with vibrant color. It is made with minimal added sweetener, which allows the delicate sweetness of the berries come through. Serve it with maple syrup on the side so everyone can sweeten it to their liking.

This scrumptious dessert has everything you expect from a berry tart: a buttery crust, a creamy center and a crown of colorful fruit. It’s an ideal ending for Mother’s Day brunch or dinner. And there's another thing going for it: it’s better for you, thanks to its healthful filling made with honey-sweetened thickened yogurt.
